Livestock farm registration programme was planned and coordinated by the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH), Peradeniya and jointly implemented with Provincial Departments of Animal Production and Health (PDAPH) in 2008.
The Number of livestock holdings recorded in Agriculture Census, 2002 was taken as the baseline for the farm registration programme. There is no doubt that these numbers would have been changed over the time. However nearly 80% of livestock holdings recorded in 2002 were registered under this programme in 2008.
Basic data on livestock farms (excluding poultry) were collected at divisional veterinary range level using a pre-tested format. These farms were then registered with respective veterinary offices and a registration certificate carrying a unique farm identification number was issued. Data entry was done by District Veterinary Surgeons under the supervision of Provincial Directors and collation of data and development of the National database was done by the Livestock Planning and Economics Division of the DAPH.
This database contains details of livestock farms registered under this programme. Although farm details were collected, data entry and verification could not be completed in 2008/2009, in Northern Province due to disturbances prevailed in those areas. Therefore data on these Northern province is not included in this page.
